From a public research institute to a science-based consultancy firm – the development of WIK reflects the evolution of the communications markets.
Set up in 1982 as the braintrust of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, the Wissenschaftliches Institut für Kommunikationsdienste (Scientific Institute for Communication Services) has become Germany’s leading research and advisory institute for communication services. Our scientific work focuses on regulatory and policy issues in the field of telecommunications, posts, energy, transport, media and information technology.
The work of WIK contributes to regulatory decision-making and sets the course for telecommunications and postal policy. The role of WIK has changed due to the liberalisation of telecommunications markets. In addition to conducting basic research on behalf of governmental agencies, we have broadened our scope and internationalised our services. Since the mid nineties, we have increasingly undertaken work for international organisations (such as the EU Commission, World Bank and foreign regulatory authorities) as well as private entities.
WIK is backed by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. Representatives of science, business as well as government actively follow the work and performance of WIK through their role on its supervisory board and scientific and commercial advisory boards.
