No. 496: Climate-neutral postal services: Status quo of letter and parcel operators in Germany

No. 496: Climate-neutral postal services: Status quo of letter and parcel operators in Germany

Authors: Sonja Thiele, Petra Junk, Antonia Niederprüm

Summary

Postal service providers in Germany are challenged to transport and deliver letters and parcels with fewer emissions in the future. This will require a fundamental restructuring of transport and delivery networks.

The discussion paper firstly looks at the impact of letter and parcel services on greenhouse gas emissions from transport in Germany. It estimates the emissions from national letters and parcels and discusses constraints and drivers for the sustainable transformation of the service providers and their transport networks. Secondly, it examines which measures the service providers have been implementing to reduce emissions. Their effects on costs, logistical processes and quality are analysed and discussed in the study.
