Development of 5G campus networks in Germany and Europe

Two years after the start of the allocation of frequencies in the 3.7 to 3.8 GHz range for local use, WIK is examining the progress so far of the allocation holders in the deployment of (5G) campus networks.

The allocation of frequencies in the 3.7 to 3.8 gigahertz (GHz) range for local applications in 2019 has placed Bundesnetzagentur in a pioneering role internationally. Decisions on frequency regulation with regard to the development of campus networks have thus been taken at an early stage. After two years since the frequencies have been awarded, the status quo of the development of campus networks in Germany is highlighted, to identify existing opportunities and obstacles for companies and organizations, and to place the regulatory approach in Germany in an international context.

The analysis is based on an extensive survey of the assignment holders of local spectrum usage rights in Germany, which was conducted in August 2021. A comprehensive evaluation with illustrations and statistics can be found in the download area (see below).

The findings with regard to frequency regulatory, the application procedure for local frequency use in Germany and current developments in the implementation of campus networks were published in a journal article in N&R 2021 (Heft 6).
