Smart municipalities: Reach out to the potentials of digitization

State of play: Smart cities and digital regions by Stadt.Land.Digital

As part of its work for the Federal initiative Stadt.Land.Digital, WIK-Consult provides an overview an overview of relevant and discussed topics of the first half of 2022. It examines several Germany-wide and regional surveys on the digitization status of German municipalities, examines the role of municipal IT service providers and how administrations are opening up to innovation.

The meta-study evaluates current studies, guidelines and events in the first half of 2022 on the topic of smart cities and digital regions.

Current studies show that digital transformation in municipalities is progressing. While many municipalities are satisfied with the current state of their digitalization, other municipalities still have a lot of catching up to do. Municipal IT service providers are important implementation partners of the municipalities. However, challenges such as the shortage of IT specialists and the implementation of the Online Access Act require greater inter-municipal cooperation between administrations and municipal companies. In the first half of 2022, the federal, state and local governments launched various formats to strengthen cooperation with start-ups and thus bring innovations to public administration.
