International Communications Market Report 2015

WIK-Consult has supported Ofcom in preparing research for the postal sector. The report compares volumes, consumer prices and competition in the UK postal sector with those in 17 other countries. It concludes that the UK has been less affected by volume declines than any other country, and that Royal Mail was able to increase letter post revenues in 2014 against the international trend.

Ofcom has published its annual "International Communications Market Report 2015" on international telecoms, broadcasting and postal services markets.

WIK-Consult has supported Ofcom in preparing the report’s chapter on the postal sector. The report compares the developments of the British postal sector with developments in 17 countries based on selected indicators, i.a. consumer prices, volumes and revenues. Ofcom commissioned WIK-Consult to collect, validate and/or estimate the postal data that provides the information used in the "International Communications Market Report 2015: Post" and to identify important trends for volumes, prices and competition.

The International Communications Market Report shows that communications sector’s total global revenues in 2014 were £1,190 bn, growing by 1.5 % year on year (incorporating the telecoms, television, radio and postal sectors). The most remarkable trend in the letter market is the continuous volume decline. Letter volume across the comparator countries has declined by 10.2 % overall since 2010. The average year-on-year decline in letter mail volume was 2.5 % across all the countries. At the same time, parcel volumes have grown significantly, driven by the increase in online shopping.
