Migration from copper to fibre networks: Interests of market parties, areas of tension and areas of consensus

Market overview for discussion in the German ‘Gigabitforum’

The study on the topic of copper/fibre migration aims to present a broad picture of the German industry. To this end, interviews were conducted with twelve companies in order to systematically record how the interests of the central market players are positioned, which areas of tension result from this and what possible potential for consensus exists. The focus was in particular on the initial situation regarding the roll-out status and planning of FTTH/B networks, on technical, operational and organizational challenges in the transition from copper to fibre, on the prerequisites for an accelerated and predictable migration and on demands for the design of the regulatory framework. The study is intended to serve as the starting point for a discussion in the gigabit forum, in order to identify and successively work through priority areas for action.
