Open data and open source for sustainable smart city solutions

State of play: Smart cities and digital regions by Stadt.Land.Digital

As part of its work for the Federal initiative Stadt.Land.Digital, WIK-Consult provides an overview an overview of relevant and discussed topics of the first half of 2023. It considers the state of open data in municipalities, the use of open source software for scalable innovations and potentials of Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN).

The meta-study evaluates current studies, guidelines and events in the first half of 2023 on the topic of smart cities and digital regions.

Successful scaling of digital applications requires local governments to open up their way of working. Open data and open source software support the transferability of solutions while promoting transparency, participation and cooperation. Municipalities are increasingly providing open data. However, there are still many cities and regions for which limited data is available. It remains to be seen to what extent the European Commission's implementing regulation for high-quality datasets will further drive the development.

A digital infrastructure for the cost-effective transmission of sensor data is being established in an increasing number of municipalities in the form of LoRaWAN. Smart applications based on this infrastructure contribute to the development of climate-friendly and resilient cities and regions.
